How to Maintain and Care for Your Shed: A Comprehensive Guide

Your shed is a valuable addition to your home, providing extra space for tools, equipment, seasonal items and a realm of other possibilities. Regular care and maintenance are therefore essential to ensuring your shed stays functional and able to withstand the elements for a long time.

In this guide, we’ll show you what you can do to keep your shed in top-notch condition, inside and out, so it can continue to serve you well.

How to Clean the Outside of Your Shed

Shed cleaning can seem like a daunting task, so we suggest starting on the outside, and then working your way inside. Do it on a day when there isn’t rain in the forecast for the next few days so your shed can completely dry out after you clean it.

Clear the Area Around Your Shed of Debris

A good place to start is to remove any trash and debris around your shed. Start by cutting down the grass and overhanging foliage around your shed, then properly disposing of all resulting waste or debris. Remove anything around the shed that pests and mold could thrive on, like firewood or yard waste piles.

Clean Windows

Wipe down all windows on both sides using some window cleaner and a soft cloth to ensure they stay clear and functional.

Inspect and Repair Your Shed

Regular inspections are crucial for identifying any structural or functional issues with your shed. Check for leaks, damaged roofing, and loose hinges. Repair any issues promptly to prevent further damage. This proactive approach can extend the life of your shed and protect its contents from the elements.

For your peace of mind, when you work with us, you get a 5-year, top-to-bottom warranty on our workmanship and materials. Should you find any issues with your shed and are within your warranty, you can contact us to come out and make repairs. Our warranty is just one of the reasons why our customers are highly satisfied with their Carolina Yard Barn sheds.

Remove Mold on Your Shed ASAP

Mold can be harmful not only to your health, but can be damaging to the items that you are storing inside of the shed.

Remove mold as soon as you notice it on any part of your shed using either undiluted white vinegar or a cup of bleach diluted in a gallon of water. Alternatively, if your shed is grimy or moldy in large sections, try using a power washer to blast away all the surface contaminants.

We’re proud to say that all Carolina Yard Barn sheds come standard with SmartSide Panel siding. SmartSide Panels come with a manufacturer’s warranty that it won’t crack, warp, or rot, and it is resistant to fungus and termites, which make it a much better alternative to other materials available in the market.

How to Clean the Inside of Your Shed

After you’ve given the outside of your shed a thorough inspection and clean, it’s time to clean the inside.

Deep Clean Your Shed

Start by removing items from the shed and sweeping the floor. Use a vacuum to remove cobwebs and dust. Use a mild detergent and water solution to clean surfaces, including walls and shelves. Don’t forget to clean windows and vents to allow for proper ventilation.

Organize and Dispose of Shed Clutter

Use shelves, hooks, and storage bins to keep all of your shed items in order. Regularly declutter your shed by getting rid of items you no longer need or use. This not only creates more space, but also reduces the chances of pests finding a home in your shed.

Finally, ensure that everything that is going back into the shed is clean and free of moisture. For example, don’t bring in gardening tools without first removing soil stuck on it. And, when you move your things back into the shed, create a clear path so you can easily access the back and sides of your shed.
